Which are the best alternative hand dryers to the Dyson Airblade?

Many people love the Dyson Airblade but don’t want to pay the price. Intelligent Hand Dryers UK put two of the other leading blade hand dryers under the same identical test conditions as the Dyson Airblade to see how they compared in terms of noise levels in a real life situation (as opposed to manufacturer’s dbA levels in a pressure chamber), energy efficiency (how much energy was required to produce a ‘hygienic’ 95% moisture reduction) and dry speed.

Noise Output.

The biggest complaint about the dyson Airblade is actually the noise levels, however we found that the Mark II sound level did not amplify much above the 1 metre noise chamber test supplied by Dyson. Dyson’s specification states 85 dBA which is safe for up to 8 hours continuous exposure and in a real life context with amplified sound from surfaces the Airblade only reached 86.6 dbA

The D-flow blade hand dryer has an adjustable motor and was measured on both eco and Turbo modes. On eco mode it measured at 74.2 dbA and on Turbo it measured at 82.3 dbA. The 4.3 dBA change is noticeable and the 11.4 dBA change is a more than doubling of the sound level.

The Mitsubishi Jet Towel is lauded as a very quiet hand dryer and lived up to its billing. Although the sound levels were considerably higher than provided in the manufacturer’s specification it was still substantially quieter than the Airblade. The Mitsubishi Jet Towel measured at 78.8 to 79.8 dbA on eco and turbo setting which is a very clearly perceptible change from the Dyson Airblade.

High Speed Hand Drying

All three blade hand dryers were immersed in temperature stabalised water for 5 seconds up to the crease of the hand, dripped for 5 seconds without shaking and then dried for 15 seconds. The hands were then dried completely with a pre-weighed paper towel and weighed again to show how much moisture was left on the hands. The starting weight of the moisture alone was 2.96 grams, The Dyson Airblade had an average over 10 dries of 0.11 grams left, The Mitsubishi Jet Towel 0.15 grams and the D-flow blade hand dryer 0.14 grams. Very fine margins really but the Dyson Airblade was the best perfoming.

Energy Efficiency

The D-flow and Mitsubishi Jet Towel both have adjustable motors where as the Dyson Airblade has a fixed output. The D-flow Eco mode measured at 0.46kw and 1.1kw on Turbo, the Mitsubishi Jet Towel measured at 0.54kw on Eco and 1.24kw on Turbo. The Jet Towel produced a very similar dry performance between Eco and Turbo mode which mean’t it was the most energy efficient hand dryer overall, with the D-flow blade hand dryer coming in a close second and the Dyson Airblade using twice the energy of either.

There are other important factors such as vandal resistance, washroom hygiene, hand hygiene, motor life performance and of course cost and therefore return on investment however this article is purely to show the objective results that came from the independent testing.
