The D-flow is an innovative new ‘blade’ style hand dryer manufactured in Europe. It is an exceptionally well designed hand dryer that provides energy efficiency and fast dry times at relatively low noise levels. The D-flow hand dryer is one of the best all round blade hand dryers available on the UK market, a claim which can be backed up in controlled, independent testing. We would describe the D-Flow as the best alternative to the Dyson Airblade and in many respects a superior value product.

This is a very stylish unit and would not look out of place in the most elegant of washrooms.  Very energy efficient and relatively quiet, which is enhanced by its ability to be manually adjusted from a “Turbo” mode to an “Eco” mode at the turn of a dial.  The D-flow is now supplied with a switch to engage an optional heater element.  The default setting is with the heater element off, therefore keeping it in its most energy efficient state.  If the heater element is switched on it will add only 400W to the rated power.

It has proven antimicrobial and antibacterial protection using silver ion technology from Biocote®, resisting the growth of microbes e.g. bacteria and moulds, complementing the cleaning routines.  There is also a H13 HEPA filter with antimicrobial treatment which deters the spread of bacteria.  It collects excess water in a drip tray to stop floors becoming wet and unsafe.  A release valve allows the collected water to be released without the necessity of removing parts.

Optional Extra

An optional waste management kit can be purchased for the D-Flow.  This means that the hand dryer can be directly connected to a waste pipe so that all water blown off the hands is disposed of immediately.  This saves time in maintaining the unit by removing the need to periodically empty the collection tray by hand. Prices available upon request.

The D-flow blade dryer has a unique diagnostic LED display system. The GREEN light shows that the dryer has power; the BLUE light indicates that the drip tray is full and requires servicing and the RED light indicates that there is a malfunction on the product.  This unit also has a digital recording system that keeps track of the total hours the motor is in use and the number of drying cycles. This information will help facilities managers to set the dryer to the most appropriate speed setting and also gives an indication as to when serviceable parts may need to be replaced.

Although this unit has a brushed motor, it is significantly long lasting and therefore we would recommend this product would be suitable for heavy traffic (up to 500 uses per day), making it a fantastic product for locations such as airports and public attractions where the turbo setting comes into its own.  Facilities that have a regular and steady stream of users may favour the eco-setting to maximise energy efficiency and turn the D-flow into an ultra-quiet hand dryer.

    This rating is based on the watts per dry of the hand dryer which is derived from the rated power and the time taken to dry the hands. We have used the figures based on either the manufacturer’s dry time, if yet to be in house tested or based on the in house testing dry time we have conducted. This will also be based on the most energy efficient setting, if the hand dryer is adjustable for speed and/or heat.

What is the life expectancy of the D-flow?

So how long will this dryer last?

Hand dryers can have 2 types of motor which are:

  • A digital brushless motor
  • A universal brush motor

In theory, universal brush motors do not last as long as digital brushless motors and require the brushes to be changed periodically. They also vary in their lifespan. Digital motors however do cost more to repair should they fail at any point.  There are variations in the lifespans of both universal brushed motors and digital motors.

The best way to choose what is right for you is to look at your facility and the amount of use each hand dryer is expected to get. This way it can be determined if a brushed motor hand dryer would be most suitable for you or whether investing in a digital brushless motor would be more cost effective.

What extra hygiene aspects does the D-flow have?

Washing hands correctly is the best way to ensure high levels of hand hygiene.  Making sure hands are completely dry is the next important aspect of hand hygiene.

Most modern hand dryers have standard hygienic properties such as fast dry times and touch free sensors to activate. However for added peace of mind some models have enhanced hygienic properties.

The extra hygiene aspects this hand dryer has are:

How suitable is the D-flow for disabled users?

There are a few points to consider when choosing a hand dryer with disabled users in mind.  These include:

  • Wheelchair access with regard to users being able to position their hands correctly
  • The amount of moisture that will be left on the floor after drying if units are to be used by people physically impaired
  • The noise level of some high speed hand dryers may be too loud for some users, such as users with autism, multiple sclerosis etc.

Disabled areas often double up as baby changing facilities, so considerations include leaving extra space for double buggies, noise levels for children etc.

The D-flow hand dryer has the following features that may negate these concerns:

How vandal resistant is the D-flow?

Depending upon the location, hand dryers can be damaged through vandalism. This includes being leveraged off the wall, damaging the outer casing and putting foreign objects into the openings. Locations in which this is likely to occur include pubs, nightclubs, transport facilities such as train stations, schools, stadiums, arenas and unattended public toilets to name a few.

How quiet is the D-flow?

Manufacturers typically measure sound levels in terms of decibels dB(A) @ a 1 metre distance in a sound proof chamber. This measurement does not take into account the increase in noise when hands are positioned under/in the dryer or when the sound bounces off walls. Where possible we supply manufacturers stated dB(A), and 2 independent tests which are more reflective of 'real conditions’.

Quiet hand dryers are important for many locations including workplaces, schools and hospitals as some models can cause disturbance. In comparison with competing high speed ‘blade’ hand dryers such as the Dyson Airblade or the Mitsubishi Jet Towel, the D-flow blade hand dryer (ECO mode) actually measured lower sound levels than the Jet Towel in situ, which is primarily marketed on its quiet performance. When compared with the Dyson Airblade it was between 40 and 120% quieter.

As can be seen from the independent testing and in “real life” conditions with the hands actually in the unit when tested, the noise level of the D-flow does seem to be higher than the manufacturer stated. It is worth noting that each 10 dB(A) rise in noise equates to a doubling in sound levels.

It is worth noting that if your noise concern relates to the noise carrying into different areas of the building then pitch will be just as relevant as sound output (loudness). How fast does the D-flow dry your hands?

In our experience, the dry time stated by the manufacturer is not always the same in reality when used by the consumer. As experts in our field we like to show the types of variations we have found from independent testing and in house testing so that you have all relevant information before you purchase.

Our in house testing, the video of which can be seen here, showed that at maximum (turbo) setting the dry time is similar to the manufacturers stated times.  This is backed up by the independent testing conducted which achieved 95.2% moisture reduction in 15 seconds on Turbo setting, however there was 95% moisture reduction in 25 seconds on ECO setting and 88% reduction after 15 seconds. Our in house testing showed that this hand dryer had a marginally reduced drying time when compared to the Dyson Airblade, however, it was the closest we tested in the “hands in” blade category.

We endeavour to include independently obtained results and in house testing, as well as manufacturer's specifications. This gives a true reflection of dry time performance, noise and energy efficiency of each hand dryer.

Noise level testing was conducted at the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and a leading independent testing facility.

We also provide in house video testing to demonstrate dry performance. This gives a visual demonstration in “real use” as opposed to using methodical scientific protocols.  The approximate dry time using this method was set when no spots of water could be seen on a paper towel after drying the hands.  This is over and above what is required to be classed as a “hygienic dry” which requires 95% of the hands to be dry after using the dryer.
